At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to : | |

At the end of this course, the student will have acquired a mastery of the grammar of Sanskrit and an aptitude for using the main philological tools which will make him capable to read, translate and contextually understand literary texts of average or advanced difficulty level. In addition, he will have been introduced to some of the other languages of India linked to Sanskrit, viz. literary "Prakrit", in Middle Indo-Aryan or Dravidian. |
Content
The course is an in-depth study of the Sanskrit language and an introduction to literary Prakrits.
The commented readings deal with poetical (kâvya) or technical (câstra) texts in Sanskrit, of average or advanced difficulty level. The literary Prakrits to which the student may be introduced are Middle-Indian (epigraphical or dramatic) or Dravidian (manipravalam).

This course is mid-way between a lecture and a seminar. The translation of the texts is prepared by the students. The philological explanations and the contextual commentaries are given by the teacher, but are also the object of a discussion with the students.
Evaluation methods

Oral exam: reading, translation, grammatical analysis and commentary of extracts from the lectured texts.
