Main themes
The course includes the following topics:
  1. Introduction to codicology;
  2. Handwritten copy of Latin texts and textual transmission issues;
  3. Ancient and medieval Latin writings;
  4. Practical training in reading Latin manuscripts (reading exercices);
  5. Theoretical and practical training in editing Latin texts.
Aims

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 At the end of this course, the student will be able:
  • to decipher a Latin manuscript, or to find the necessary assistance to read it;
  • to locate a written text within the history of ancient and medieval Latin writings;
  • to read, analyse and use an edition (introduction and critical apparatus);
  • to collate various major manuscripts of a given text and to prepare a provisional edition;
  • to use bibliographical and working tools.
     
 
Content
The seminar will deals with Latin paleography and textual criticism.
The seminar will first and foremost be taught from a practical point of view: the student will learn how to read medieval manuscript and make a critical edition.
Each section of the course will be divided into two stages: the first one being a lecture (theoretical teaching and the second one a series of practical exercises.

Part of the course consists of lectures (theoretical explanations). The remainder consists of practical exercises.
