Main themes
1. The course covers two linguistics fields: Dutch phonetics and phonology, and Dutch morphology;
2. Introduction to the reading (and writing) of scientific articles;
3. Presentation of reference books.
Aims

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 Provide a foundation course in Dutch phonetics, phonology and morphology. The students should also be able to analyse reference books with a criticizing mind.
 
Content
The course is an introduction to Dutch phonetics, phonology and morphology.
Phonetics and phonology (vowels, diphthongs, consonants; co-articulation; accentuation and intonation).
Morphology (especially lexical morphology, loanwords and neologisms).

Mixed approach of lectures, reading of scientific articles and exercises.
Evaluation methods

Due to the COVID-19 crisis, the information in this section is particularly likely to change.

Oral examination
To pass this course, it is necessary to pass both parts of the exam (phonology and morphology). A failure of one of the two parts implies a failure for the entire course. On the other hand, if you pass one of the two parts of the exam, you will be exempted for that part at the next examination session.
At the oral exam special attention will be paid to the language skills (in particular the pronunciation of Dutch).
