Main themes
The course is designed to address EU current issues. As it relies on EU current topics, the specific content of the class varies from week to week.
Aims

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 The aims of the course are
1. to familiarise students with a broad array of EU issues, most specifically with political, institutional, economic, social, cultural and environmental issues faced by the EU;
2. to help students develop a critical understanding of EU current affairs and how to deal properly and swiftly with information sources;
3. to ensure that students are able to express a well-argued position on various issues, actively drawing upon knowledge acquired in other classes.
 
Content
Course LEUSL2107 has two components:
  1. the debate sessions organised by the lead professor on EU topics, guests may also be present
  2. the current affairs monitoring and comment sessions, moderated by teaching assistants of the School of European Studies and prepared by students.
Teaching methods

Interactive sessions with presentation and discussion.
Students must actively follow EU news, in press articles and on blogs (suggested on Moodle). Academic literature can bring a great complement of information.
Evaluation methods

Due to the COVID-19 crisis, the information in this section is particularly likely to change.

The continuous assessment is fourfold:
  1. a written essay: 25 % of the final grade;
  2. an oral presentation during monitoring and comment sessions: 25 % of the final grade;
  3. active participation during the classes: 25 % of the final grade;
  4. a policy brief handed at the end of Q2 on an EU current topic, defined by the teaching team: 25 % of the final grade.
Students whose final grade is below 10/20 will have to take an exam and/or submit a written assignment in August.
