Aims

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 Build a corpus of language data (oral or written) for a particular purpose of linguistic research;
 
2 Handle several computer softwares specialized in corpus analysis;
 
3 Make a quantitative study on a corpus;
 
4 Make a qualitative study on a corpus.
 
Content
GENERAL OBJECTIVES :
(1) To be able to lead, completely and autonomously, a linguistic study on corpora;
(2)To acquire a general knowledge on linguistic corpora (in French, but not only), tools and method.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES :
(1) To design a corpus with the aim of a specific research question;
(2) To collect oral and written data + metadata;
(3) To "edit" the data (transcription, cleaning, formatting, encoding, etc.);
(4) To tag the data (at the several levels of linguistic analysis) with the help of proper software;
(5) To formulate research questions / hypothesis;
(6) To choose a methodology of analysis;
(7)To exploit / analyse a corpus according to a chosen methology (qualitative or quantitative);
(8) To present the results of a research.
Teaching methods

Due to the COVID-19 crisis, the information in this section is particularly likely to change.

30 hours of lectures + 10 hours of practical works (dedicated to the realisation of a personal research based on the methodology explained in the lectures).
Evaluation methods

Examination: individual work to be presented in the final courses (+ written report on work); oral examination (on course content and work methodology).

Teaching methods
The course can be followed online via Teams, the video of the session is available in the Teams group and on Moodle. The 5 practical sessions will be available at the beginning of December in the form of video tutorials (no synchronized session).
Evaluation methods
The grade for this course is calculated on the basis of three assignments:
  • A field survey (25% of the score), to be returned by the 3rd of November at the latest
  • An oral presentation (15 min. Max., 25% of the mark) during which each student presents a linguistic problem approached from the perspective of corpus linguistics. These presentations will take place during the last session of the quadri (the 14th December) via Teams.
  • A 12 pages essay (including figures and references, respecting an imposed style sheet) to be submitted on Moodle no later than the 8th of January. This work constitutes the written version of the December presentation and must take into account the critics and requests for corrections made then.
