Main themes
The course is structured around different themes related primarily to the professional world in which the student is meant to function in the future.
Aims

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 Reading comprehension:
  • Can understand articles and reports on everyday topics or related to their field of study and can understand the writer's particular point of view.
B2- level of the CEFR.
 
2 Listening comprehension:
  • Can understand standard spoken English (live or from recordings) on both familiar and unfamiliar topics normally encountered in personal, social, university or professional life.
  • Can understand most of the newspapers and television programmes.
B2- level of the CEFR.
 
3 Speaking skills:
  • Can develop a simple, direct and prepared presentation on a familiar topic or a topic related to their field of study and can answer a series of questions linked to their presentation.
B1 level of the CEFR.
 
4 Writing skills:
  • Can write short and simple notes in connection with specific needs.
A2 level of the CEFR.
 
5 Code and Culture
  • Expansion of basic vocabulary (2000 basic words) and reinforcement of specific German grammatical structures.
    As far as speaking skills are concerned, the course focuses more on communicative skills than on correction.
  • for all the skills aforementioned: Introduction to German culture.
    The capacity to appreciate the values transmitted by this culture is developed through different fields (social, political, economical).
 
Content
The aim is to allow the student to know the professional world better, through the reading of newspaper articles, conferences, films, video sequences, company simulation exercises'
All skills will be trained (listening, reading, speaking and writing) although the focus will be on developing speaking skills in a professional environment. 
Teaching methods

Due to the COVID-19 crisis, the information in this section is particularly likely to change.

  • Groups of 20 students maximum.
  • The activities may be organized (partly) online if requested by the sanitary situation.
Evaluation methods

Due to the COVID-19 crisis, the information in this section is particularly likely to change.

  1. Continuous assessment (class participation, daily work, oral presentation in group) 50%, details and plan in course notes.
  2. Oral final exam: simulation of a businesslike communication task (written file has to be submitted in advance). This exam will take place at the last courseweek.
  3. Final mark in june : 50% december mark and 50% may mark.
  4. September: oral examen 50% and written exam 50% (listening and reading 10%, grammar 10%, vocabulary 20%, writing 10%).
  5. If an external and free evaluation can be organized (e.g. TestDaF-Erprobung), students must take part to this evaluation.
During code red or orange, the final exam will take place on Teams and Moodle.

Teaching methods
In case face-to-face activities are suspended, they will be replaced by remote classes on Microsoft TEAMS.
Evaluation methods
The final written test will be posted on Moodle (by May 7, 2021) and will consist in :
- 1 job or internship offer in a German speaking environment, chosen by the examinee;
- 1 letter of application in German;
- 1 curriculum vitae in German.
The final oral test (simulation of a job interview) will take place on Teams during week 13.
The dates for August/September 2021 will follow.
