Although we do not yet know how long the social distancing related to the Covid-19 pandemic will last, and regardless of the changes that had to be made in the evaluation of the June 2020 session in relation to what is provided for in this learning unit description, new learnig unit evaluation methods may still be adopted by the teachers; details of these methods have been - or will be - communicated to the students by the teachers, as soon as possible.

Main themes
This is an introduction to bioethics as history, content, societal issues and a multidisciplinary approach. It will consider the type of rationality at work in relation to other normative (deontological, juridical) norms and the place that an approach to theology can have as a discipline.
It will provide support to students to understand what "bioethics" is today, its social necessity in the field of health and technology, its limits also in theoretical terms and field of application/scope. It will understand that theological discourse has its place, but only in the deployment of bioethics as a multidisciplinary field.
Provisional Plan:
1. Bioethics: Historical and legislative milestones
2. Bioethics as an exercise of prudential judgment
3. Bioethics and Clinical Ethics
4. Bioethics and theology: what place for ecclesial and social issues?
5. Assuming necessary tensions: A sexual and family ethics in the prism of medicine and Christian ethics. Elements of fundamental theology for Christian discernment.
6. Around a singular question, "play" an ethics committee.
Aims

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 ·   mobilize the documentary, paper and computer sources of the main books of bioethics.
·   listen to others, develop a capacity for discernment in the fields of contemporary bioethical thought, particularly in relation to faith and theology.
·   synthesize his/her thoughts and communicate them - orally and in writing - in a simple language, audible in a multidisciplinary field.

Evaluation methods
-   The student will demonstrate his/her ability to understand and synthesize three articles inherent in bioethics, including one in English.
-   The student will prepare a "role play" featuring a multidisciplinary ethics commission.
-   The course will be followed by an oral (prepared) examination on two questions: one relative to one chapter of the course, another one referring to a more critical and synthetic understanding of the whole course.
