Main themes
Introduction to Medieval and Modern Oriental Studies, with attention to linguistic and cultural diversity. The focus of the course is on: the Byzantine and Slavic World, the Near and Middle East, the Christian and Muslim East.
With regard to the areas in question, the course addresses the following themes:
1. historical and geographical orientation;
2. scripts;
3. a grammatical outline of the main languages;
4. an overview of representative literary texts written in these languages;
5. a historical introduction to the Medieval and Modern phases of the main Oriental cultures and civilisations;
6. an introduction to the history of Oriental Studies.
Aims

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 At the end of this course, the student in Ancient Languages and Literatures will have acquired an overview of the areas covered (the Byzantine and Slavic World, the Near and Middle East, the Christian and Muslim East). Furthermore, he/she will have acquired more advanced knowledge of the main languages and main works of the literatures written in these languages.

Content
Introduction to Medieval and Modern Oriental Studies, with attention to linguistic and cultural diversity. The focus of the course is on : the Byzantine and Slavic World, the Near and Middle East, the Christian and Muslim East.
Teaching methods
Classroom instruction sustained by the Moodle virtual teaching environment. It requires active involvement. Students are expected to closely read the documents posted on Moodle, as a preparation for the successive sessions.
Evaluation methods
Written exam on all materials.
Note : students who have failed to sufficiently attend the course (more than 3 absences) may be excluded from the exam, as per recommendation by the jury.
