Main themes
This course explains the key stages in the development of ancient philosophy: the pre-Socratic, Classical (Socrates, Plato, Aristotle), Hellenistic and Imperial Roman (Stoicism, Epicureanism, Scepticism and Neoplatonism) periods. Students will also learn about the specific nature of ancient philosophy (sources often fragmentary, importance of doxography, problems related to the manuscript tradition, relationship between oral and written traditions, specific literary genres, the working conditions of ancient philosophers, structure of the schools of philosophy in ancient times, the purpose of ancient philosophy, etc.). In class, students will read and comment on representative texts by the main philosophers.

By the end of this course, students will be able to present an overview of the main movements and themes of ancient philosophy. They will have developed their critical reading of ancient philosophical texts and secondary literature. |
