Aims

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

Q1 Compréhension à la lecture / Reading Comprehension
  • to understand the significant points of a direct and non-complex newspaper article.
  • to read and show a satisfactory level of understanding of factual texts about subjects of personal interest.
B1 level of the "Common European Framework of Reference for Languages"
 
Compréhension à l'audition individuelle / Individual Listening Comprehension
  • to understand the main points of TV-programmes about familiar subjects, provided that the language is pronounced clearly.
  • to follow the general plan of short presentations about familiar subjects, provided that the language is pronounced clearly.
 
Compréhension à l'audition interactive / Interactive Listening Comprehension At the end of this teaching unit the student should be able to follow a clearly articulated speech within an everyday conversation, occasionally having some words or expressions repeated.

  • to make a short presentation about a subject related to his/her everyday life, be able to give short explanations and justifications for his/her opinions, plans and actions.

  • to face a limited number of direct and simple questions

Code
  • Knowledge of basic vocabulary (2000 basic words) and structures of Dutch. Reinforcement and extension of vocabulary.
  • As far as speaking skills are concerned, the course focuses more on communicative skills than on correction.
 
Culture For all the skills aforementioned: introduction to Flemish and Dutch culture.

Content
This teaching unit involves that basic vocabulary and structures are trained, reinforced and expanded in order to prepare the students for the next teaching unit.
It is structured around themes of general interest and field-related themes for each of which receptive and productive activities aimed at consolidating and broadening vocabulary and grammar are provided. Particular emphasis on grammar points, likely to cause difficulties to French-speaking learners.
Teaching methods
Workload - Classroom hours : 60 h + Homework (including selftuition)
The cours is divided into 5 themes linked to daily life in Q1:
  1. Life in a student town
  2. Youth culture
  3. Food and health
  4. Discovering the world
  5. Money and advertising
Revision and extension of general lexical knowledge and of specific vocabulary linked to the themes dealt with.
  • Revision of the grammatical structures specific to the Dutch language with the help of a power point diaporama on Moodle and the theory in the syllabus. Addtionnal productive exercises are done in class.
  • Activation of receptive skills in class based on self tuition material.
  • Oral conversation practice by means of role plays, etc…
Q2: this teaching unit is structured around themes, each of which includes receptive and productive activities aimed at consolidating and broadening vocabulary and grammar. This teaching unit focuses mainly on oral production about field-related themes. Video and audio fragments are used to illustrated the themes. Each theme will be followed by discussions or role plays giving the student the possibility to use the newly acquired vocabulary and structures. Particular emphasis on grammar points, likely to cause difficulties to French-speaking learners.

The classroom activities require a certain amount of preparation on the part of the student (exercises, vocabulary, …)
Evaluation methods
Q1
  • Mid-term test on vocabulary, grammar and irregular verbs + active involvement in the classroom and continuous assessment. (20%)
  • Written evaluation during week 13 (60%)
  • Interactive oral exam in the last week of the term (20%)

Q2
  • Individual presentation + active involvement in the classroom (30%)
  • Oral exam : a conversation about a text or a video that was seen in class and about a newspaper article (provided by the student) related to one of the themes discussed in class (30%)
  • Written exam during the exam period : vocabulary, irregular verbs, grammar, listening skills, reading skills and writing skills (40%)
In September, the student will have to take the written and oral exams again.
