Although we do not yet know how long the social distancing related to the Covid-19 pandemic will last, and regardless of the changes that had to be made in the evaluation of the June 2020 session in relation to what is provided for in this learning unit description, new learnig unit evaluation methods may still be adopted by the teachers; details of these methods have been - or will be - communicated to the students by the teachers, as soon as possible.

Main themes
The seminar will deal with a topic in the area of practical philosophy to be determined by its members, in relation to research projects they are working on. Attendance at meetings of the seminar and active participation in discussions is strongly encouraged. Professors and other researchers from the UCL interested in the topic, as well as other specialists on the topic from outside the UCL, may participate in the seminar.
Aims

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 Upon completion of the seminar the student should be able to :
  • handle a particular research topic in the area of practical philosophy (ethics, political philosophy, social philosophy), basing work on a critical analysis of major works and texts by authors that deal with the topic in question, and on contributions presented within the framework of the seminar ;
  • write a scientific paper on a precisely delimited research topic that is germane to the topic of the seminar ;
  • participate actively in cooperative research on practical philosophy, especially through discussion of contributions made within the framework of the seminar.

Seminar on Practical Philosophy (Walter Lesch, in English in the academic year 2019-2020, Q2)
Ethics in the Digital Age
What do the challenges of the digital transformation of our world mean for ethical theory and practice? Can conventional concepts simply be applied to new situations? Or do we need a more radical remake of ethical reasoning? The seminar will identify a limited choice of controversial cases and suggest appropriate methods of ethical analysis and problem solving.
Teaching methods
Students should master basic notions in practical philosophy. The purpose of this seminar will be to go deeper into some specific concepts.
Teaching in French. A passive knowledge of English is required since several compulsory readings will be in English.
Evaluation methods
The assessment will take into account the student's participation in class. It will focus on one or two short papers to be written by the students.
Other information
Attendance is compulsory, given that this seminar will rely on the active participation of students.
Please pay attention to the fact that the course schedule will change from week to week, due to the fact thatwe will host Prof. Merrill as part of an Erasmus exchange.
