1 At the end of this learning module, the student should be able to:
  • write clear, well-structured and detailed texts about a wide range of topics linked to their field of interest; synthesize and assess information and arguments from various sources.
  • master several genres and their respective requirements.
  • raise their awareness about the notion of "target-audience" or "addressee", so as to better adapt their written production to the various communicative objectives.

The contribution of this Teaching Unit to the development and command of the skills and learning outcomes of the programme(s) can be accessed at the end of this sheet, in the section entitled “Programmes/courses offering this Teaching Unit”.
Content
The course combines practical writing and reading comprehension seminars with more formal sessions (straightforward teaching, structural and vocabulary practice, error-analysis and hesitation-resolution).
  1. The first part of the course aims at discovering a communicative situation on the basis of some form of input (e.g. a text, an audio or video podcast). The learner will familiarize themselves with the subject through groupwork activities.
  2. The second part will focus on the text-production adapted to the communicative situation elaborated earlier (field, genre, typology and target-audience).
Teaching methods
This course essentially adopts a CLIL-oriented approach (Content-Language Intergrated Learning). This means several themes will be dealt with (historical, cultural, literary, etc.) before initiating the practical writing sessions, which are aimed at producing the various written genres that are the objective of this course.
The students will be exposed to various linguistic inputs, will have to solve the various tasks proposed, using group- and individual writing approaches.
Eventually, a lot of time will be spent on feedback, self-reflection and self-correction.
Evaluation methods
Continuous assessment; explicit and systematic reflection on the writing and reading process will be part of assessment.
