Main themes
The major themes of the course are : the theory of international organisations, the United Nations Organisation (main organs, peace-keeping missions and specialised institutions), politico-military organisations and regional organisations.
Aims

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 At the issue of this course, the students will be able to understand the politico-institutional working structures and to analyse the main modes of action of contemporary international organizations.

Content
Content : The part on " the theory of international organisations " raises the question of the definition and clas-sification of international organisations. We then turn on the means of the organisations (competencies, legal entity, organs, finances, international officers). The part on the UN will be divided in three chapters: 1) the insti-tutional approach : history and UN Chart, aims and principles of the UN, admission and members, analysis of the main organs (General Assembly, Security Council, Social and Economic Council, Secretariat, International Court of Justice; 2) questions related to international peace: peace-keeping operations; 3) specialised institutions (UNESCO, WHO, ILO, financial and economic institutions). The part on politico-military organisations deals with the NATO and the part on regional organisations in the Organisation of American States / OAS and of the African Union/AU (the organisations selected may change). Method: lectures (open to discussion), analysis and discussion of a collection of readings and, if possible, organisation of conferences with international experts.
Evaluation methods
Synthesis questions via an oral or written exam.
