Prerequisites
The student should have followed the teaching unit of intermediate level part 1 (LNEER 1230) or a course of similar level (level B1 of the CEF for the reading and listening skills, B1- for the speaking skills and A2 for the writing skills)..
Main themes
This teaching unit is structured around themes of general interest and field-related themes.
Aims

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

Reading Comprehension

At the end of this teaching unit the student should be able

  • to understand in detail direct and not so complex factual texts (articles, reports, ') concerned with general and field-related subjects. -
  • to understand articles about contemporary problems and  to catch the position or the viewpoint of the author.

Level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Individual Listening Comprehension

At the end of this teaching unit the student should be able

  • to understand a large part of expositions or television and radio programs on subjects of general interest or on subjects related to the field of studies, provided that the language is of a standard level and clearly pronounced and that the presentation is direct and simple,
  • to understand most TV news and current affairs programs.

Interactive Listening Comprehension

At the end of this teaching unit the student should be able to understand in detail what is said in an everyday conversation in standard language on current affairs or subjects related to the field of studies.

Level B1+ of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Individual Speaking Skills

At the end of this teaching unit the student should be able to present a short presentation of a subject of general interest or of a field-related subject

Interactive Speaking Skills

At the end of this teaching unit the student should be able to interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible provided the subject is familiar or field-related. (With a good control of grammar)

Level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages

Writing Skills

At the end of this teaching unit the student should be able

  • to write a short personal letter, a short report or a short abstract,
  • to write short factual and descriptive reports adding a short personal opinion.

Level B1- of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Code: broadening of the students' range of basic vocabulary and consolidation of the command of the basic structures of the Dutch language, particularly those that cause problems for French speaking people).

Culture: In the development of all the above-mentioned skills the teaching unit will aim at making the students aware of Dutch and Flemish cultural aspects.

Content
This teaching unit involves  
  • the revision and extension of general vocabulary as well as specific (field-related) vocabulary (media, Flemish and Dutch culture),
  • the revision of specific Dutch structures (selftuition)
  • the training and development of reading and listening skills (authentic material).
  • developping the speaking skills
  • learning how to work with a portfolio.
Teaching methods
  • Lessons in groups of max. 20 students.
  • Workload:
    Classroom hours : 30 h
    Homework (including selftuition): 60 h
  • Revision and extension of general vocabulary as wel as of specific (field-related) vocabulary (media, Flemish and Dutch culture).
  • Revision of specific Dutch structures (selftuition).
  • Training and development of the reading and listening skills (authentic material).
  • Training and development of the speaking skills (presentation, roleplaying, ...).
  • learning how to work with a portfolio.
Evaluation methods
  1. Continuous assessment (participation and specific tasks) 20 %
  2. Written exam (grammar, vocabulary, listening and reading comprehension, writing) 40 %
  3. Oral exam (portfolio and content of the course notes) 40 %
In September, the student will have to take the written and oral exams again.
