For allophone students with a competency level of B2 in both French and Russian
Main themes
This teaching unit will address different themes, such as:
·         The contemporary history and political systems of the countries studied,
·         Specific aspects of Russian of interest to a translator or interpreter working into French;
·         Implicit cultural, historical or political references present in a text to be translated, 
·         The historical connexions between translation and culture, 
·         Writing and speaking skills in Russian from a transversal perspective.

Contribution of teaching unit to learning outcomes assigned to programme

On completing this unit the student is able to :

·         Identify and employ documentation that is pertinent and useful in comprehending, and enlarging upon, the themes and questions addressed;

·         Read, understand and summarise (in Language C) written texts and audio-visual material relating to themes and questions addressed; 

·         Classify chronologically the most significant political processes of the countries studied, applying high quality analysis and clear expression and respecting the terminology specific to the topic;

·         Bring together similar elements from miscellaneous sources to achieve a coherent, high-quality informational whole;

·         Explain the most significant features and processes of morphosyntactic change in Russian respecting the terminology specific to the topic;   

·         Understand, explain, situate and illustrate both the concepts addressed in the course and the implicit cultural, historical and political references present in the material to be translated or interpreted; 

·         Fluently extemporize ideas and opinions on current political, economic, social and cultural affairs with clarity and attention to accuracy; 

·         Render the essential content of complex messages in Russian with rapidity and in a structured way with the aim of facilitating communication; 

·         Present, orally and in written form, an individual work of analysis dealing with historical, cultural and linguistic topics addressed in the course and observing the rules specific to writing and public speaking in Russian;

Apply to translating and interpreting the concepts addressed in the course.

Content
Russia from the early 20th century to the present day: (geo)political, economic and cultural evolution.
Teaching methods
In-class course unit.
This course unit has an interactive format:
- some topics are presented in form of lectures, some other are presented by students on the basis of audiovisual and written materials;
- discussion and analysis of (extracts of) documents presenting problems for comprehension and intercultural transfer.
The interactive format requires that students come prepared to classes, present required topics and take an active part in exercises and discussions.
Evaluation methods
Evaluation is performed through two components:
1) oral exam on the topics addressed in the course unit: 10 points;
assessment criteria: knowledge and comprehension of the topics and oral fluency in Russian;
2) an essay of ± 10 pages (7,000 ' 8,000 words) in Russian on a chosen topic (politics, society, culture, literature, in-depth study of a topic shortly addressed in class, etc.) and oral presentation and discussion of the essay in class: 10 points.
Assessment criteria: quality of the contents (in-depth analysis of the topic, synthesis of underlying sources, argumentation, referencing) and form (text structuring, coherence, lexical and grammatical correctness).
The essay will be submitted by the end-April and presented in class in May.
In case of a second registration for the exam: if the global minimal score of 10/20 for the course unit is not obtained, students are required to present that part for which their score is below the pass mark (both parts if both scores are below the pass mark).
