Content
The course will deal with the very notion of princely frailty in the Low Countries and more generally in western Europe at the end of the Middle Ages. Although monarchic control seemed to keep growing, political society had such contradictory demands that it gave a hard time to women, children, teenagers, unfit, ill or ageing rulers. Many of them were mistreated, kidnapped or dethroned kings and counts remained precarious powers.
