Main themes
The course is designed to address EU current issues. As it relies on EU current topics, the specific content of the class varies from week to week.
Aims

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

The aims of the course are

1. to familiarise students with a broad array of EU issues, most specifically with political, institutional, economic, social, cultural and environmental issues faced by the EU;

2. to help students develop a critical understanding of EU current affairs and how to deal properly and swiftly with information sources;

3. to ensure that students are able to express a well-argued position on various issues, actively drawing upon knowledge acquired in other classes.

Content
LEUSL 2107 has three components:
  1. The ‘European Week’(Q1);
  2. Guest speaker sessions, organised by the lead professor on EU topics, and subsequent debate with students (Q2);
  3. Current topics presentation and comment sessions, prepared by students and moderated by teaching assistants (Q2).
Evaluation methods
The assessment is fourfold:
  1. A written essay handed at the end of the European Week (Q1) (25% of the final grade);
  2. An oral presentation during presentation and comments sessions (25% of the final grade);
  3. Weekly MCQ on current European topics (25% of the final grade). Active participation to debates in class will add points to MCQ results;
  4. A written assignment handed at the end of Q2 on an EU current topic, defined by the teaching team (25% of the final grade).
Classes are compulsory. Missing a class with no valid excuse will penalise students.
The grade of one of the parts can be carried from one session over another as far as it is above 2,5/5. Grades can not be carried from an academic year over another academic year.
