Prerequisites
The A2 level of 'the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages'. Remedial learning tools will be made available to weaker students.
Main themes
The course is based on different topics related to criminology.
- The texts and videos used in the course are authentic materials and require the student to prepare the texts at home using reading techniques acquired in class.
- Analysis and commentary of the texts and videos in class require the active participation of the student.
- Vocabulary and basic structures are reinforced by written and oral exercises (analysing, commenting)
- Grammar is studied in context and reinforced by regular exercises.
- English pronunciation is practised through exercises based on general and specific vocabulary.

Content
This course is aimed at improving reading and listening comprehension skills and is based on authentic material oriented towards the students' field of interest (criminology); it is also aimed at giving the students a better mastery of the linguistic code of English through grammatical and pronunciation exercises as well as developing the students' general, specific and academic vocabulary.
By the end of the course, the students should have acquired reading skills roughly corresponding to the B1+ level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and listening skills to the B1 level of the same framework.

Teaching methods
This course includes 30 hours of classroom activities as well as self-tuition on Moodle
- Extensive reading of texts at home using reading strategies and note-taking techniques.
- Content-based activities in class.
- Analysis of and comments on the texts.

Lexical extension exercises and comments on language
points. - Extensive and intensive decoding of television programmes.
- Pronunciation exercises on general and specific vocabulary.
Evaluation methods
At the beginning of the year, the students can take an exemption test of the same level as the final exam (compulsory enrolment). The students who pass the test with a mark of at least 12 out of 20 will be exempted from the course and the exam.
