Aims

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

The students get an insight into the main strategies and tools for the prevention and treatment of disease states;

The students get an insight into the main types and principles of healthcare systems worldwide;

The students understand the basic principles of healthcare economics and management;

The students get an insight into the multiple steps and key principles in the development of health technologies;

The students get an insight into the basics of data and knowledge generation in healthcare;

The students get an insight into the new innovation models and career opportunities in healthcare;

The students understand the need for interdisciplinarity and convergence of medicine, life sciences and physical sciences, engineering and management, from basic research to patient-centric care, including (pre)clinical research, development of medicines and medical devices, healthcare organization, management and economics

Session 1: Challenges in healthcare

Session 2: The value of healthcare
-          Health as a public good
-          Defining and measuring value in healthcare
Session 3: Health on a global scale
-          Harnessing information and communication technologies in healthcare
-          Global challenges in healthcare
Session 4: Digital age in healthcare
-          Harnessing disruptive technologies in healthcare
-          Handling data, materials and knowhow in healthcare
Session 5: Entrepreneurship and healhcare
-          Entrepreneurship, business and management in healthcare (1&2)
Teaching methods
5 sessions + 3 workshops: The changing healthcare landscape (interdisciplinary, (interfaculty), interuniversity, international program) with experts

Certificate in Translational Medicine: continuous evaluation via quiz + Case study (group work, mini-dissertation max. 10 pg)
