Main themes

The course will combine lectures and exercises which will comprise of the analysis of the parts of speech and of syntactic propositions; the rules of agreement, as well as verb morphology and the main rules of spelling in French. Students will learn to justify the way they apply these rules.

Aims

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :
1	By the end of the course and exercise tutorials, students will: - be able to distinguish and name the parts of speech and to identify the functions these are likely to take on in a French sentence; - be able to distinguish the types of propositions in a compound sentence; - be able to formulate and systematically apply the rules of normative grammar; - know the main rules of spelling; - be able to reflect on the norm and its applications.

Content

The aim of the course is to study rules of grammar as a logical explanatory system based on the observation of phenomena which affect the form, place and meaning of words in French.
Classes are devoted particularly to the following points :
- analysis of the nature and function of words as well as examination of how they are classified;
- review of various major phenomena relating to the morphology of verbal forms in relation to the use of tense and moods in French;
- the role of the verbal pivot in French syntax and types of structure of the verbal group;
- types of phrase and different phenomena affecting their form;
- analysis of the components of simple and complex phrases (types and functions of  propositions);
- review of a selection of important points in the use of spelling and punctuation ;
- development of a critical approach in the study of the language ; consideration of the necessity and limits of the linguistic norm;
- well-considered use of grammatical terminology.
 

Teaching methods

Course  and exercise tutorials.

Evaluation methods

Continuous assessment by questionnaires.  Test in the first semester: 25% of the final grade.  Test  in the second semester: 25% of the final grade.  Test in June: 50% of the final grade.  If a second session is required, the final grade entirely depends on the exam taken in September. 80% of correct answers at a test are required to obtain the grade of 10/20.
