The contribution of this Teaching Unit to the development and command of the skills and learning outcomes of the programme(s) can be accessed at the end of this sheet, in the section entitled “Programmes/courses offering this Teaching Unit”.
Content
The course is centered on the major figures of the patristic period and on the most representative works. The chronology determines the succession of materials. For the first two centuries, works are grouped by literary genre (epistolary, apologetic, martyrial, etc.); special attention will be paid to the so-called 'apocryphal' writings. For the next four centuries, the man, the writer, and the great orientations of his thought are discovered for each author. The course also seeks to awaken students to the issues of attribution, transmission and translation of ancient texts. The students are put in contact with the writings of the Fathers in the first sessions, through a 'portfolio of lectures' where the patristic texts are accompanied by a pedagogical guide; these texts are chosen according to their theological interest. At the end of each session, the professor instructs the students on a reading program and, possibly, exercises (individually or in subgroups) to familiarize them with the main working tools.
