A good knowledge of ancient Greek is recommended.
Main themes
An introduction to the language and to Old Slavonic texts.
This course focuses on the linguistic and philological study of Old Slav, by examining:
1. The place of Slavic in the Indo-European family;
2. The place of Old Slavonic in the Slavic family;
3. Cyrillic script, phonetics, phonological alternations and morphology;
4. The syntax structures are studied while reading texts.
Aims

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

At the end of this course, the student will be capable of reading and interpreting for himself texts of medium difficulty. In order to do this, he will have acquired the bases of Old Slavonic grammar and vocabulary.

Content
Near to Proto-Slavic (Common Slavic), Old Slavonic is attested by liturgical texts translated from Greek, dating from the 10th and 11th centuries AD.
The lectures examine the different chapters of the descriptive grammar and offer an insight into the historical grammar. The course is completed by the reading of texts coming principally from the Gospels.
Teaching methods
The course consits in :
1° lectures on grammar and philological interpretation of texts;
2° reading and analysis of texts prepared by the students.
 
Evaluation methods
Oral exam.
