Main themes

Lectures, using audio-visual material. Subjects dealt with: the origins, Dante, Petrarch, Boccaccio, the Petrarchans, Tasso, Ariosto, baroque theatre and opera.

Aims

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :
1	- Basic course; - This course aims to introduce students to the great authors of the Middle Ages and of the baroque period and to develop their literary sensibility; - Introduction to the language of the Middle Ages.

Content

The students will take a broad look at Italian literature from the Middle Ages until the 18th century. The students will become familiar with the linguistic features of Medieval and Renaissance Italian in the practical sessions and will be able to discuss the elements relevant to the course (both the theoretical and practical sides) in an oral presentation. Using the tools available from the library and online, the students will undertake independent research into the key biographical and bibliographical information concerning the authors discussed on the course.

Teaching methods

The course is in the form of lectures: this is a deliberate choice to give students experience of a form of teaching they will encounter in Italy on an Erasmus exchange.
The practical sessions deal with the preparation of a choice of texts from a linguistic point of view. These texts will be covered in class and will require students to make active use of analytical procedures introduced in LROM1753.

Evaluation methods

The student will be evaluated as follows:

January Session - Partial exam

'    Written exam during the examination session (Exercice sessions)  (1/3)

June Session

'    Written assignment & oral presentation during course (1/3)
'    Oral exam during the examination session (Formal lectures) (1/3)
'    Written exam during the examination session (Exercice sessions if failed in January) (1/3)



Septembre Session
'    Written assignment consigned to the professor at the beginning of the examination session  (1/3)
'    Oral exam during the examination session (Formal lectures & oral defense of the written assignment) (1/3)
'    Written exam during the examination session (Exercice session if failed in January) (1/3)

The student must pass all the sections of the course.
A student has to resit the sections he failed.

All written assignments have to meet academical standard linguistically and formally.
