Main themes
A further cumulative experience of architectural design. A question is posed:
  • Either history is perpetuated through the program
  • Or the program questions and imposes itself upon history
  • Or history and program influence each other mutually.
The way that the question is posed will allow students to understand the place of history, the influence of civilization and tradition, the evolution of architectural theories, the impact of styles and schools of thought and their implications on the contemporary built environment. The studio will generally work on housing programs. The particular problem statement may cover cases from urban single-family houses to collective apartment buildings. The studio will include a theoretical introduction, as well as a presentation of case study references that may serve to support the development of a project. Subjects discussed will include the origins of places, the trace, the accumulation of different logics, composition methods, construction techniques, materials, site preservation, etc.

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Use drawing as a concrete means of analysis and design
  • Understand the effects of history on a contemporary spatial situation, and develop appropriate tools and methods
  • Become familiar with interactions between historical context and the emergence of a program in an architectural design project
  • Take the measure of history as a resource for spatial development
  • Understand and question the specific constraints of the design of housing
  • Produce, present and argue a design project.

Evaluation methods
This activity evaluate through a continuous evaluation. The final evaluation (jury) will be organized only once. Therefore, there is no opportunity to represent this activity at the September session. The continuous evaluation is carried out on the basis of a "digital notebook" provided by each student at the end of the studio.
Only a significant absence with a medical certificate (2 weeks for an activity of 45 hours or 60 hours, 4 weeks for a 120-hour activity) may justify an evaluation during the September session.
An absence justified by a medical certificate at a jury will be evaluated during the examination session of the semester during which the activity was organized.
Other information
This activity involves presence of the teaching staff for two half-days per week. Students are expected to spend the equivalent of four half-days per week on studio work. Sufficient time is left between scheduled work periods so that students may work independently on the project. Pre-requisite: The preceding studio.
