Main themes
The course focuses on the emergence of art criticism in the context of the birth of the 'art world' in the 18th century. The centrepiece of the course is the story of the history of art criticism in France in the 19th century, as it interacted with the development of the institutional and political landscape. A central debate is the question of the relationship of art to society and to science. The 20th century is characterised by the internationalisation of modernism, until modernism itself was inevitably called into question.
Aims

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1

To understand art criticism as an indispensable authority in bringing to light the ideological and social issue of artworks. To understand how the development of the figure of the art critic is directly linked to the institutional world in which he or she operates.
