Imagine a grid: each box in the grid represents a form of art. Design is like a ball which bounces from one box to another, absorbing and accumulating experience as it goes.
The process of creation, which transforms and idea or a concept into an object which will become functional, is the basis of this teaching unit.
How can we move from the banality of an object to an object of desire?
'Eventually everything connects'people, ideas, objects. . .the quality of the connections is the key to quality per se.' (R. Eames).
The topics covered are:
  • integration of storage
  • lighting
  • seating
  • using materials for other purposes
  • tableware.
Aims

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

  • By the end of this course, students will be able to

experiment with using materials

  • natural, polymer, resin, recycled etc. .

view the creation of objects as an extension of architecture

  • bring objects into architecture : lamps, coat-stands, storage etc.

define the qualities of object

  • innovation, design, production methods, life cycle etc.

Test an artistic approach

  • To capture the ¿spirit of the time¿ and identify the means which will enable it to be revealed
  • To test and extend the limit of the imagination
  • To reformulate, assimilate a question and explore various possible avenues to respond to it

  • To take a deliberate step from an uncertain beginning by assembling pre-existing concepts that are both first diffuse and heterogeneous, to reach a proposal that others can comprehend
