This course tackles contemporary issues relating to the rise and multiplication of intergovernmental organizations at the international level. Il will focus on the governance stakes that are involved notably with respect to the challenges deriving from the globalization process, the emerging powers, and with respect to their influence and the results they yield in the delivery of the missions they were entrusted with.
At the end of the course, the student will be able to analyze the major stakes relating to the governance of intergovernmental international organizations. S.he will be able to inquire into the interplay of the actors within these organizations and to understand the strategies they use. S.he will be able to assess the impact of the actions and evolutions of international organizations. S.he will also be able to understand and critically discuss the theoretical postulates of an article touching to all such issues. Finally, s.he will be able to identify the most appropriate conceptual and theoretical tools for the study of a specific issue relating to the course.

Lectures and discussion sessions about compulsory readings
This course has been developed in complementarity with other related courses (Law of international organizations; Globalisation and governance; International democracy and civil society). It is interested in the reasons and consequences of the multiplication and diversification of international organizations. It reviews the major theories that have been developed to account for the role of international organizations at the international stage and within the wider globalization process. It proposes a reflection on the fields of action where the IO are particularly active, and develops the notion of regime.
The course also tackles less classical issues, such as the role of the IO in the diffusion of norms and the balance of power such a process unveils; the informal aspects of the functioning and role of IO; the stakes deriving from the rise of emerging powers and the strategies the latter have developed regarding IO
