The prerequisite(s) for this Teaching Unit (Unité d’enseignement – UE) for the programmes/courses that offer this Teaching Unit are specified at the end of this sheet.

Main themes

The student must find and propose to the titular of this activity two places where it is possible to him to make a stay of 4 or 8 days (30 or 60 hours of effective work) thus a total of 12 days. The place of the 8-days stay belongs necessarily to the field of the farm animals (breeding) and that of the 4-dats stay to that of pets (breeder, pension, refuge). An agreement will be signed between the responsible of the exploitation (master of stay), the UCL (represented by the titular of the activity) and the student. For each stay, the student must write a short report describing his activities during the stay and a 2-page scientific report developing one of the aspects related to his stay. The two stays will take place during the week ends and holidays.

Aims

The aims of this activity is to familiarize the students with the non clinical aspects of various professional activities centered on the holding of domestic animals, specially farm animals (bovine, small ruminants, pigs or poultry) and pets (dogs and cats). These non clinical aspects concern more particularly animal handling and restrain techniques, rules of security and hygiene, general organization of a professional animal activity and constraints due to physiological characteristics of animals (reproduction, food, milking).

The contribution of this Teaching Unit to the development and command of the skills and learning outcomes of the programme(s) can be accessed at the end of this sheet, in the section entitled “Programmes/courses offering this Teaching Unit”.

Evaluation methods

The evaluation is essentially based on the reports but the the evaluation of the student by the master of stay is also considered.

Teaching methods

A vade-mecum including all the information needed to choose the stays, the forms to fill in and the writing of the reports is available on iCampus.

Content

Two stays, of respectively 8 or 4 days, in professional environment (farm and pets) are to be done by the student.
