Aims

Contribution of teaching unit to learning outcomes assigned to programme

This unit contributes to the acquisition and development of the following learning outcomes, as assigned to the Master's degree in translation :

Specific learning outcomes on completion of teaching unit

On completing this unit the student is able to:

·         Demonstrate knowledge and command of the concepts and techniques involved in revision and post-editing (metalanguage of translation / revision / post-editing);

·         Distinguish between a translation that meets the required standard of quality and one that requires revision;

·         Determine that a given translation is not of sufficient quality to merit editing;

·         Identify in a translation, whether effected by machine or by a translator, the nature of the elements to edit in line with the pertaining criteria or parameters of quality control, and the different levels of editing involved; 

·         Identify the most appropriate translation theory reference sources in implementing the checks and/or corrections necessary in a translation which is to be revised and/or post-edited;

·         Demonstrate command of the specific CAT tools to use in revising and post-editing a translation; 

·         Produce a research paper on a specific subject related to revision / post-editing, setting forth theory-informed argumentation and concrete examples from his or her own translation practice;

Evaluation methods

The first session (end of Semester) final evaluation consists of :
'    A written exam focused on the theoretical and practical aspects of revision and post-editing (from 60 to 75% of the overall rating),
'    A portfolio of different tasks to complete in accordance with the specifications given via the e-learning platform (from 25 to 40% of the overall rating).
The second (September) session final evaluation consists of a written exam focused on the theoretical and practical aspects of revision and post-editing,  as well as of the completion of the different tasks of a portfolio. In the latter case, the students having scored 60% or higher during the first session can choose either to keep their score or to try to improve it by taking the second session exam again ; the students having scored below 60% are to take the second session exam concerning the portfolio as well (new tasks according to new specifications).

Teaching methods

   Lectures presenting the theoretical aspects and practical examples of revision and post-editing;
  Training material and documents (theory and exercises, bibliography and recommended reading list, vocabulary of revision and post-editing) available on the e-learning platform.
