Main themes

In order to reach its aims, the course will focus on the study of : the Protestant Reformations, the Council of Trent and the development of Catholic Reformation (Roman impetus, new religious orders, spirituality, extra-European missions), the relation between Church and State (and the so-called State Catholicism), Christian Enlightenment in the 18th century and the impact of the Revolutions on Christianity.

Aims

Mastering the chronology of Early Modern Christianities

Understanding the great religious issues of the time

Apprehending the different historiographical paradigms relating to their interpretation

Teaching methods

The students will be provided with a syllabus for the first 9 classes with a special focus on acquiring historical knowledge Early Modern Christianities. The next five classes will text the acquisition of that knowledge as the focus shifts to a series of specific issues and to the study of historical documents.

2. From Reformation to confessions : Protestantisms

II. From Confessionalization to Secularization (mi 17th ' late 18th century)

5. Religions, states, and geopolitics in Europe and the World

6. Continuity and routinization of the Reformations

7. Intra and extra confessional dynamics (coexistence, conflicts, dissidence)

8. Enlightenment Christianities

9. Revolutions and Religion in Europe
