Prerequisites

Preliminary knowledge of Dutch linguistics and a good proficiency in Dutch (advanced level, B2+ in terms of the Common European framework of reference).

Main themes

This course introduces the student to the phonetic and phonological study of modern Dutch and fosters the reflection on norms and normative attitudes in relation with Dutch pronunciation.

Aims

By the end of the course the student should:
1.be familiar with the phonetic and phonological terminology of Dutch. 2.be able to write Dutch words and sentences in phonetic writing (International Phonetic Alphabet).
3.have developed a critical attitude concerning norms in Dutch pronunciation.
4.have developed a critical insight in the sociolinguistic varieties of modern spoken Dutch.

Evaluation methods

Presentation of an aspect of Dutch phonics/ pronunciation and practice in Dutch pronunciation and phonetic writing.

Content

In the first part of the course a survey will be presented of the specific terminology of Dutch phonetics and phonology.

In the second part the students must prepare a presentation on an aspect of Dutch pronunciation: norms, attitudes, pronouncing dictionaries, sociolinguistic varieties'
