Main themes
  • Exercises identification and description of artworks.
  • Learning and appropriate use of everyday vocabulary of art history (architecture, sculpture, painting and decorative arts) and musicology (basic vocabulary and typology of musical instruments from iconography).
  • Identification of the documentary typology and introduction to a system of references.
  • Exercises in reading and synthesis of a scientific article (in art history and / or in musicology).
  • Introduction to heuristics and basic textbooks in art history and musicology.
  • Introduction to some aspects of the study of a work of art and writing a scientific text incorporating a state of the art and a critical apparatus.
  • Exercises in comparison of biographies of musicians, including musicians or actors of the musical world
Aims

At the end of this teaching unit, the students will have been introduced in the terminology of art history and musicology, heuristic principles, bibliographic references, observation, description and analysis of artwork, writing, illustration and presentation of a scientific work.

Evaluation methods

The activity is evaluated in three modes:
 
a) continuous evaluation, based on periodic work over the two terms ;
b) research work, the subject of an oral presentation and written work in May;
c) two written exams at the end of each term, on the basis of material covered in the courses and during the practical exercises.
 
The student who does not present his final assignement, either oral or written, may be refused entry to the exam in June.
 
In case of failure in the compulsory partial examinations in January, the student presents an examination of the entire matter in June. If successful in the partial examination, he presentes examination on the matter of the second term and two scores are weighted for this part of the examination. In case of a second presentation of the examination, the student is required to resubmit the examination on the subjects of the examination in June and the January partial if he was successful or not, and the end of year writing assignment the grade obtained in the latter is less than 50%. In case of failure in the intermediate work (continuous assessment), a single alternative work is imposed and weighted up to the total of ongoing evaluation and final work (65%).

A mix of theoretical lectures and supervised practical work supervised or during field visits (sites and museums).
 
Practical exercises by performing individual work.

Content

Terminology in art history and musicology.

Bibliographic guide to sources and working tools (encyclopedias, dictionaries, bibliographies, textbooks, monographs, collections of works, periodicals, museum and exhibition catalogs, databases, etc.).
 
Reference systems and bibliographic abbreviations.
 
Methodology of the analysis of works of art: description, documentary research, state of the art, initial analysis.
 
Writing, illustration and written and oral presentations of scientific work.
