The verb yare' ("fear") and its derivatives pose a difficult question. They express an emotion negative (awe, fear) or positive (awe, admiration), but also a personal or collective attitude that may be related to faith. The question arises especially when the object is God.
After a general introduction to the subject, we will read a variety of texts (mostly narrative) where the meaning of the vocabulary of "fear" changes (eg Gen 28; Exod 14; 1 S 12, etc.). The goal is to clarify the issue on the basis of an interpretive framework developed, on the basis of the psychology of emotions, by P. Van Cappellen in a memoir entitled Yr 'as an emotion from a few texts from the Old Testament (UCL, 2014; prom. A. Wénin). The main method will be narrative analysis.
