|
Prerequisites |
Standard training in applied mathematics (e.g. contents of the mandatory courses of the master in mathematical engineering).
|
Aims |
The objective of this seminar is to introduce students to research activities in applied mathematics organized at UCL.
After taking this course, students will be able to :
- Fruitfully attend a research seminar, and extract the main ideas
- Critically assess scientific results presented in talks or journal articles
- Give an oral or written presentation of advanced scientific results
|
Evaluation methods |
Student performance will be assessed on the basis of
- Active participation to (reading) seminars
- Presentation of an article during a reading seminar
- Writing of summaries for seminars attended
- Preparation of an oral communication or a written report related to one of the topics presented during the (reading) seminars
The type and number of activities will be determined in agreement with the coordinator at the beginning of the semester.
|
Teaching methods |
Students take part to various research activities in applied mathematics organized at UCL, namely the following (reading) seminars:
- Systems and Control seminar
- Optimization and Mathematical Programming seminar
- Large Graphs and Networks seminar
(researchers and professors from UCL or other universities present recent research works)
- Reading seminar in Optimization and Operations Research
- Reading seminar in Large Graphs and Networks
(these reading seminars are devoted to the study of historically important articles, or exciting recent developments)
The type and number of activities will be determined at the beginning of the semester by the students according to their scientific interests, in agreement with the coordinator, so that the total amount of work corresponds to 3 ECTS.
|
