Main themes

On the basis of case studies from the visual arts of the Southern Netherlands (15th to the 18th centuries), the objective is to sharpen the iconological methods of interpretation and to better understand the interactions between the works of art and their religious, political and cultural context. Some themes will be studied more deeply as they offer a comment on the status of the arts during this period in the Northern Europe.

Aims

The student will deepen his knowledge and ability to analyse images in their cultural context. He will specialize particularly in the iconological interpretation of works of art of the Southern Netherlands from the 15th to the 18 centuries.

The content could change each year. One or several themes will be studied with examples in order to deepen the knowledge of the context of the works of art.
