Main themes

Early Netherlandish Painting: support, frame, preparation layer, imprimitura, underdrawing and coloured layers. Some milestones are highlighted in the evolution of technology in painting between the 14e and 17e centuries in the Low Countries.

Aims

Training in technical examination of paintings, aimed at a better evaluation of its condition, its attribution, datation authenticity; the detection of fraud and forgery will also be discussed. The teaching focuses on Early Netherlandish Painting, but the students will also consider later periods, during seminars and through personnel work.

Evaluation methods

Evaluation : oral test (10) + personal work (10).

Teaching methods

Theoretical course and practical works.

Content

The course covers technology easel painting (supports, grounds, imprimitura, pigments used since the Middle Ages until the early 20th century including gilding and varnish) and the frames from the 15th to the 19th.

A painting selected by each student will be examined by the naked eye, stereomicroscope, ultraviolet fluorescence, infrared reflectography and XRF spectroscopy.
