Main themes

The lectures broadly deal with specific questions related to the history of sculpture (style, iconography, typology, technology, aesthetics, etc.) with particular emphasis on the different functions of sculpture (religious, political, economical, etc.).

Aims

Acquiring knowledge in the field of theory and practice of sculpture, especially in the Southern Low Countries from the Middle Ages to the 18th century. The student will be able to analyse sculptures in their context of creation and use.

Evaluation methods

Assessment by final oral examination; continued evaluation during the year; written assignments.

Teaching methods

Lectures by the teacher or invited lecturers. Each session should be prepared beforehand by the students on the basis of one or several articles. There will also be analyses of sculptures in situ.

Content

The contents can change each year depending on the chosen theme (ex.: the Paragone debate, the socio-professional status of sculptors, the diffusion of Renaissance style in the Low Countries,...).
