Prerequisites

LGLOR1671/1671A and/or LGLOR1672/1672A or a course deemed equivalent by the lecturer.

Main themes

Mastery, at a philological level, of Sanskrit, and an introduction to literary Prakrits.

Alternating with LGLOR2672, this course deals with the following themes:

1.Commented reading of texts in classical Sanskrit (30 hours lectures);
2. Specific questions of Sanskrit grammar or introduction to a literary Prakrit (15 hours lectures);
3. Cursory reading of a text (7.5 hours exercises);
4. Personal reading of a text with a written preparation (7.5 hours exercises).

Aims

At the end of this course, the student will be capable, thanks to the acquisition of a philological mastery of Sanskrit, to identify, read, translate and comment on any text written in this language. In addition, he will have been introduced to some of the other languages of India linked to Sanskrit, viz. literary "Prakrit", in Middle Indo-Aryan or Dravidian.

Evaluation methods

Oral exam on the basis of pre-prepared text.  The final mark takes account on a proportional basis of the texts prepared individually.

Teaching methods

The course is given during the whole year, for two or four hours per week (according to the alternance of the themes) .

It includes lectures and reading. Students receive a copy of the texts studied or the manuals referred to, and the active participation of the students at the course is desirable, based of course on the preparation beforehand. Those students who are unable to attend the lectures and exercises have the option of increasing the proportion of individual work  (point 4 above) which will rate more highly  in the final evaluation.

Content

The course consists of a consolidation of the knowledge  and philology of  Sanskrit  language and philology, as well as an introduction to some of the literary Prakrits.

1. Commented readings of poetical texts (kâvya) or technical texts (câstra) in classical Sanskrit, with special attention given to, on the one hand, philological questions of edition and the critical apparatus, and on the other hand, the translation of  native glosses.
2. The literary Prakrits to which the student may be introduced, are: Middle-Indian (epigraphical or dramatic), Dravidian (manipravalam or Malayâlam).
3. The reading of a narrative or epic text
4. The individual reading  with written preparation, consists of a text suggested to or by the student, in continuation of the texts seen under 1, or in function of the students own interest
