Content

This course aims at a study in depth of a period, genre or author of Greek literature, or examines a theme in the light of different works.

In 2011-2112, the course will be on Homer's Iliad, particularly on the values and institutions of  the heroic age shown in the work. It will make a special study of the conditions of the oral transmission of the epic, of the Iliad being put into writing in the VIth century, of the specific  problems of editions and manuscript tradition, of the religious environment and the important divine figures who intervene in the poem, and of the social values relating to justice in the larger sense (timê, thémis, dikê, moira, cosmos) and also emulation (éris).

Bibliography

A succinct syllabus and an outline bibliography are available on the iCampus server.

In 2011-2012 the translation of the Iliad by Eugène Lasserre (Garnier-Flammarion) will be used as a reference; students are asked to procure this.
