3. The function of tenses and moods, the function and uses of pronouns;
4. Personal translation of a Latin prose text (cursory reading).

The exercises correspond to those done in class on the syntax and prose composition. There will be optional periods of exercises for revising the morphology.

He will also be capable of translating and analysing Latin prose texts (of the imperial period), and of translating from French into Latin (advanced level).

Evaluation methods

Regular evaluation during the year (tests and work done at home).

Final exam consisting of a written portion and an oral, designed to test theoretical knowledge and practical skills (including translation from Latin into French and from French into Latin).

Teaching methods

Theoretical course , together with practical exercises (translations from Latin into French and from French into Latin).

Content

Systematic study of the fundamental rules of Latin syntax, in particular those affecting the the function and use of pronouns. The constructions studied are illustrated by a linguistic analysis of classical sentences and texts. This practice includes proficiency in translation into Latin and the personal translation of a text of a certain length (cursory reading : one of Cicero's speeches, Tacitus's Germania).

A planned series of tests verifies how much morphology has been acquired.
