In-depth study of Classical Greek grammar.

This course deals with the following themes:

1. Greek morphology and the translation from French into Greek (advanced level);
2. The essential structures of Greek syntax (complementary and adverbial clauses, the use of moods and tenses; case syntax);
3. Personal translation of two Greek prose texts (cursory reading).

At the end of this course, the student will have mastered the whole of Greek morphology as well as the syntax of cases and the basic rules of the syntax of propositions (including translation from French into Greek at an advanced level), and will thus be able to translate and analyse Classical Greek prose texts of average difficulty. He will also have a good grasp of the rules of accentuation.

Evaluations are organised at regular intervals during the term (tests and homework).

The final exam, which includes a written part and an oral part, evaluates the theoretical and practical knowledge of the student, including translation from Greek into French and from French into Greek.

Lectures coupled with exercises (translation from Greek into French and from French into Greek)

Systematic study of the basic rules of Greek syntax, especially the structure of complementary and adverbial subordinate clauses, the use of moods and tenses, and the syntax of cases. All grammatical constructions are illustrated by a linguistic analysis of sentences and extracts from classical texts. This course also includes exercises in prose composition as well as the individual translation of Classical Greek texts of substantial length (cursory reading: large extracts from two Platonic dialogues (Symposium and Phaedo), and a speech by the orator Lysias).

At regular intervals there will be tests on vocabulary and morphology.
