Multipolarity or multilateralism in the EU [ LEUSL2305 ]

Course EUSL2012 "Action extérieure de l'Union européenne".

The EU is a major power in the international system and an active promoter of the multilateral exchanges within the international institutions.

The EU supports political and economic multilateralism in the international relations which is based on a legal system which strives for the implementation of new regulatory targets.

Due to its size and its sphere of influence, the EU is at the heart of this new multipolar order. Therefore the focus will be on its relationships with the US, Russia, China, Japan and the emerging powers like India and Brazil.

The course aims at familiarizing the students with  two major dimensions of the international playing field in which the EU is actively involved.

Written or oral examination.

- Overview of the strategic partnerships between the EU and the US, Russia, China, Japan, India and Brazil.

- Position, sphere of influence and subsequent behavior of the EU and its member states within the international organizations such as the UN General Assembly and Security Council, the WTO, the IMF, UNESCO including the G8 and the G20.

- Discussion on the articulation between multipolarity and multilateralism, and its repercussions on the EU foreign policy.
