Main themes

1. Introduction to various models in demography.
2. Stationary and stable populations.
3. Standard age patterns of mortality (model life tables and relational Brass logit model), nup-
tiality (Coale and McNeil 1972), fertility (Coale and Trussell 1974, Booth 1984) and migration
(Rogers and Castro 1981).
4. Introduction to some indirect techniques used in countries with decient data.

Aims

Part A of this course consists in an introduction to the modelling of population
processes. At the end of this course, students should be able to
1. understand the general principles behing the modeling of population processes,
2. understand the relations between the movements of a population and its structure,
3. employ the most commonly used standard schedules of vital events,
4. proceed to concrete applications of some models (construction of a stable-equivalent popula-
tion, indirect estimation techniques).
