Level A2 of the « Common European Framework of References for Languages ».

The topics addressed in class aim at arousing the undergraduates' interests in English-speaking countries' culture and history, both past and present. 

Reading comprehension

At the end of the course, the students should be able to  grasp the content and significance of articles and reports on topics connected with their interests or their jobs.

Listening comprehension

At the end of the course, the students  should be able to understand the gist of TV  programmes concerning general topics and oriented towards their fields of interest in standard and clearly articulated English language.

Speaking

At the end of the course the students  should be able to give their opinion on general topics (education, advertising, media, culture, ') covered in class.

Usage

1. revision and reinforcement of intermediate vocabulary in context
2. grammar revision

Continuous assessment : 10%

January exam : 20 %

Written exam

• Reading comprehension questions (10 %)
• Vocabulary and usage questions (10%)

June Exam : 70%

Written exam (50%)

• Listening comprehension questions (20%)
• Reading comprehension questions (15 %)
• Vocabulary and usage questions (15%) 

Oral exam (20%)

September exam

Students will not be exempted for a part of the exam. If you take the September exam, you have to re-do

• the written exam (70%)
  AND
• the oral exam (30%).

Your continuous assessment mark will not be taken into account.

• Training learners to become autonomous readers of authentic written documents
• Broadening the students' vocabulary scope
• Teaching key grammar points such as tenses, auxiliaries, connectives and the passive voice.
• Listening decoding strategies in a foreign language
• Role plays, debates, discussions
• English pronunciation and stress patterns.

As regards speaking skills, the emphasis will be on fluency rather than accuracy.

Portfolio of texts and videos: the set texts range from historic/al sources to today's specialized literature and vary in language registers to include prose, speeches, poetry, songs, video scripts ' from several target-language countries.
