Main themes

Sequence of topics, covered in a rigorous comparative way : (1) party organizations and organizational change; (2) the functions of political parties; (2) programmatic and ideological change; (3) new types of parties, and 'new' party families; (4) latest evolutions of 'new' social movements and more 'established' social movements; (5) relationships between parties, institutionalized interest groups and societal mobilizations: competition or network-building (6) conclusion: towards new forms of interest intermediation in post-industrial societies?

Aims

This course concentrates on the analysis of recent trends and ongoing developments in political parties and the 'organized civil society' in liberal (pluralist) democracies worldwide, through a rigorous comparative approach

Content The course is lecture-based (using a basic syllabus as well as an extensive list of core & complementary read-ings.
