Main themes Various methods of individual, marital, family and group psychotherapy treatment as well as different sexual, marital and family pathologies, especially : absence of communication, excessive aggression, pathological jealousy, family and marital violence, abuse and incest, impotence and frigidity. Special emphasis is on the concept of the designated patient, rigidity of the system, intergenerational transmission and symptoms as the solution for the survival of the system together with social and legal aid structures and mediation. In the last part of the course, the differential psychopathology of the sexes is covered.
Aims Students who have taken this course will be able to make a diagnosis and specify the most appropriate means of psychotherapeutic, psychiatric or psychosocial treatment both for the diagnosed disorders and the reported problems, for implicit and explicit requests, for the contextual dimensions as well as for the psychological situation and the financial resources of the family or the couple in question.
Evaluation methods

The evaluation is a combination of an examination quote (oral exam after course) and the presentation quote (presentation during course). For the bibliography: papers and chapters will be available on ICampus.

Teaching methods

Formal lectures in combination with presentations of the students. The formal lectures are supported by DVD's and case studies based on the clinical experience of the teacher. Several experts in the domain of family, couple, and sex therapy are invited to give a guest lecture.

Content

For family therapy: evidence based therapies for externalizing disorders (e.g., Functional Family Therapy and Multisystemic Family Therapy), internalizing disorders (e.g., Attachment Based Family Therapy), working with the new families (e.g., stepfamilies and mosaic families, same sex parent families, foster parents), therapy with multi-problem families including (sexual) abuse, working with psychiatric diagnoses as narrative accounts, working with a group of families (Multi Family Therapy). For couple and sex therapy: evidence based couple therapies (e.g., Emotionally Focused Therapy and Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy), working with violence, extramarital relationships and divorce in the couple, talking about sex with the couple, working with sex problems as reduced titillation, problems with male erection and female orgasm. In addition, basic techniques as working with a genogram and multidirected partiality will be discussed.
