Main themes The course deals with topics which can give meaning to observations and developments of families and intimate relationships. This may include : different aspects of the family and marital life cycle, as well as recent developments, communication and conflict management, especially aggression, extra-marital relationships and separation/divorce, building sexual identity, differences and similarities in behaviour, emotion and cognition, both conscious and unconscious. Different possible family structures as well as ordinary and marginal sexual behaviour are also examined.
Aims By the end of the course, students will : - be able to analyse, from a psychological point of view, the issues relating to family, marital and sexual life ; - have a picture of the current state of knowledge and theoretical conceptions including systemic and psychoanalytical aspects so they have foundations for clinical practice and education ; - be aware of relevant scientific procedures in the study of families and sexuality.
Content The course is designed to provide an introduction to the different psychological, psychoanalytical and systemic perspective which can give meaning to observations and developments of families and intimate relationships. This may include : different aspects of the family life cycle and recent developments, communication and conflict management, especially aggression, building sexual identity, differences and similarities, tensions between individual desire and fantasy, interference in marital life from conscious and unconscious experiences from early childhood. Part of the course is devoted to single parent families as well as reconstituted families. There is also examination of different forms of sexuality, particularly homosexuality. There are lectures and also required reading.
Other information Support : reading folder and supplementary bibliography, transparencies, CDROMs and videos of clinical cases. Assessment : the methods of assessment will be explained by the lecturer(s) at the beginning of the course.
