Main themes |
Main concepts : text ; medial (graphic and phonic code) and conceptual (language of distance and proximity) dimensions, microsyntax and macrosyntax, phrase, material dimension (intonation, punctuation etc.), discursive markers, pragmatic markers, connectors, cohesion, informational progression, coherence etc.

Aims |
By the end of this activity, students will be able to
- define what a text is and the contribution made by the linguistics of the text to its interpretation ;
- clarify the distinction between written and spoken language and explain the impact of the method of production on the formal aspects of a text ;
- identify within a text the relevant elements for its structure and interpretation;
- analyse a short text or an extract by highlighting the cohesion and coherence devices ;
- read, understand and compare different academic articles on the same issue (transversal competence)

Evaluation methods |
- there is a written examination (2 x 2 hours) on the course (Parts I and II)
- for Part I, students are also required to do an individual assignment

Encadrement : Lectures
This course mainly checks the knowledge of theoretical concepts covered in the course (definitions, concepts, critical synthesis), as well as the ability to apply them in the production of written and oral language.

Content |
The focus of this course will be on textual organization of spoken and written texts from the level of micro- and macrosyntax. Special attention will be paid to formal indicators of text segmentation (intonation, punctuation, discourse markers), and to differences in register (spoken vs. written) or in text-type (narratives, academic, drama, face-to-face conversation, etc.).
Methods. The course consists of lectures and exercises.
