Prerequisites |
The student should have followed the course of intermediate level part 1 (NEER 1230) or a course of similar level (level B1 of the CEF for the reading and listening skills, B1- for the speaking skills and A2 for the writing skills).

The course is oriented on the fields of social sciences. Based on authentic materials, the course is intended to develop the students' communicative competences (reading, listening, speaking) that are required in their academic work and in their future professional life.

Development of comprehensive skills (reading and listening) based on authentic documents (written and spoken) on subjects of general interest and on the specific field of studies. The vocabulary, the structures and the oral communication skills are exercised and consolidated by means of written and oral production (role-plays, small debates, small presentations, ...).

Aims |
Reading Comprehension:

The student should be able to understand in detail direct and not so complex factual texts (articles, reports, ') concerning with general and field-related subjects.

The student should be able to understand articles about contemporary problems and they should be able to catch the position or the viewpoint of the author.
Level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Listening Comprehension - Individual :

The student should be able to understand a large part of expositions or television and radio programs on subjects of general interest or on subjects related to the field of studies, provided that the language is of a standard level and clearly pronounced and that the presentation is direct and simple.

The student should be able to understand most TV news and current affairs programs.
Listening Comprehension - Interactive :

The student should be able to understand in detail what is said in an everyday conversation in standard language on current affairs or subjects related to the field of studies.

Speaking Skills - Individual :

The student should be able to present a short presentation of a subject of general interest or of a field-related subject
Speaking Skills - Interactive :

The student should be able to interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible provided the subject is familiar or field-related. (With a good control of grammar)

The student should be able to write a short personal letter, a short report or a short abstract

The student should be able to write short factual and descriptive reports adding a short personal opinion.

Vocabulary: broadening of the students' range of basic vocabulary.

Grammar: consolidation of the command of the basic structures of the Dutch language, particularly those that cause problems for French speaking people)
Culture:
In the development of all the above-mentioned skills the course will aim at making the students aware of Dutch and Flemish cultural aspects.
