Main themes
The course deals with the historical and epistemological foundations of Art History and the different interpretative trends analysing works of art.
Aims
Acquiring knowledge in art theories and their applications in Art History.
Evaluation methods
Assessment by final oral examination and/or written assignment.
Teaching methods
Lectures by the teacher or invited lecturers. Each session should be prepared beforehand by the students on the basis of one or several articles (the list of these articles will be communicated at the beginning of the year).
Content
The course deals with some decisive art theories as well as with other discourses that interpret works of art (art history, art criticism, aesthetics, sociology, psychology, anthropology, ect). The course will take three main directions: historiography (historical context of these theories), epistemology (critical assessment of the foundations, orientations and transformations of Art History) and hermeneutics (developing interpretative tools). ).
